There were violent riots in Kano on 14 October 1991. The riots were reportedly sparked off by Muslim demonstrators in protest against a visit by a German preacher Reinhard Bounike (West Africa 21-27 Oct. 1991). Rienhard Bounike had allegedly managed to convert some Muslims to the Christian faith. As many as 100 people are reported to have died and houses and vehicles were burned during the rampage (Ibid.). The government imposed a dust-to-dawn curfew and banned all religious gatherings in order to restore calm to the area.
